Teeth, teeth, everywhere...

March 6th, 2008 at 06:29 pm

Teeth are expensive!

I just had the cats into the vet for teeth cleaning today--between the cleaning and the kidney infection they found in Diana, I walked out just shy of $600.

What's more, I had been having trouble with one of my teeth--it hurt and things kept getting stuck in there. I went to the dentist only to find that an entire piece of the tooth chipped off. There was a large filling in the tooth and it's possible that it just wasn't strong. Since there's already a filling and I'm missing a big chunk, they need to do a crown. Lovely.

My gums have also started receding a bit, so I need a deeper cleaning on my molars. Plus I've got 5 (count 'em, 5!) small cavities on various molars. I swear I brush my teeth--I just have super deep grooves in my molars and they can be prone to decay. Between the crown, cleaning, and cavities, I'm looking at $1,100 out of pocket!!!

Who knew teeth could cost so much money?

Yikes! I have a dentist appointment in a couple of weeks. I haven't gone for almost 3 years because it's so expensive. I hate to see what my bill will be!

Step 1: Go to Sears and purchase a pair of vice grips
    $15.00

Step 2: Boil vice grips in water
    $.25 (water is expensive)

    Step 3: Proceed to mirror
    Free

Step 4: Pull each tooth as if it were your last
$1.00 worth of gauze packed in swollen mouth

    Step 5: Shoot the cat!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Just kidding. Had a crown today, my 11 year old had a tooth pulled in preparation for braces and our 7 year old has a 10:00 a.m. appointment tomorrow to re-fill a lost filling. I feel you pain.....less the tooth pulling of course. God bless!!!!

I hear you. I'm in the same boat -- gum treatment totalling $800, two crowns at $1000 each, a filling for $125 -- and I'm supposed to get a cleaning every three months now because of the state of my gums. So far I've had one $400 gum treatment -- I'll have to do the rest as I can afford it.

Floss is a very cheap miracle for many gum problems after you have the treatment you need to get the toxins out. I always recommend brushing 2-3 times a day, then rinsing with Listerine (or Biotene if you either have dry mouth symptoms or are a recovering alcoholic), and flossing 1-2 times a day. If a hygienist has never showed you how to brush and floss properly don't be ashamed to ask for instructions. There really is a better way to do both that most people do not know.

Also, if you have children get their permanent teeth sealed. It is a thin coating that covers the "grooves" in the tops of the molars and premolars to prevent cavities.

Hope this helps a bit. Prevention is a lot cheaper than disease.

I'm at home recovering from dental surgery right now, I just got my wisdom teeth out. Getting them pulled out is not what hurts, its the 2K+ bill that I just spent!
    cheers

I hear you on the dental issues. We spent about $2k last year on dental stuff for our family.
